Professional background
Personal Statement
F. John Sherwood, LPC, LMFT brings clinical training, leadership experience, and a long-standing commitment to helping individuals, couples, and families move through psychological suffering.
Introduction
My university studies in Business Administration, Economic Policies, and Corporate Organizational Systems first led me to military service and later to private industry. I held high-level executive positions within multi-level corporate structures, working with multi-million-dollar budgets dedicated to human and non-human resources.
Travel throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, and Central and South America deepened my understanding of diverse languages and cultures. I am a native of San Antonio, Texas. English is my primary language, with good fluency in Spanish.
I am licensed by the Texas State Department of Health as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. For almost 30 years I have managed my own private practice and continuously met the licensing, training, and regulatory requirements of my governing boards.
Evolution
In 1985, after completing my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, I began a private practice career in mental health. My early work included psychiatric hospital settings and private practice.
In hospital environments I administered psychological evaluations, consulted with psychiatrists on treatment plans, conducted individual and group therapy, designed education programs, and coordinated discharge plans for continuing outpatient support.
Because of my work with inpatient substance-abuse recovery programs, I designed curricula for two hospital systems and founded On-Track Recovery, Inc., a one-year outpatient treatment and recovery program for adults addicted to alcohol and drugs.
Specialization
In the late 1990s I devoted my professional energies to the ongoing development of my private practice. I began to see a recurring relationship between the health of clients and the quality and strength of the families from which they came, particularly the strength of their parents’ marital relationship.
I dedicated my practice to helping couples heal from past wounds, address current weaknesses, rediscover friendship, and develop healthy communication skills for managing conflict and honoring the life dreams that brought them together.
My interest in guiding couples through conflict led me to the research of John Gottman, Ph.D., and to evidence-informed approaches for understanding, managing, and resolving relationship conflict.
Confidential HIPAA-compliant video conferencing now makes these professional services available to adults and couples wherever they have internet access.
